University Websites: In the Eyes of the Beholders

by Rey S. Medenilla, Cesar Geronimo, Mark Tolibas, and Zenaida Porciuncula

More and more universities have been taking advantage of the worldwide web to heed the stakeholders need for information.  Through their websites, the general public conveniently access salient facts about them.  Queries are answered easily just clicking the right buttons.  Because of the benefits of websites, its architecture should be perfectly crafted. Website design matters; university websites must put premium on it. Not only does it enhance the substance but also delight the readers—“a gift wrapped meticulously is received astoundingly.”
The subject of the  review that follows are four university websites: Arellano University,  STI University, Meycauayan College and University of Makati.  To come up with the comments, the authors use these questions as guideposts:  Is the website design effective?  Does the architecture make sense?  Does it help create the image of the university? Are the design features or elements effective?

1. The Arellano University Website

On the whole, the Arellano University website adheres to the requirements of an effective website.  The logo, which is the most noticeable symbol on the banner, assures the reader that he is at the right location; no need looking for other options.  The font and the size of the university name are just sufficient, comparing with other design elements.  Having only few buttons, it is less complicated and more understandable.  Both the use of the icon instead of words and the red color, add up to visual acuity.  Also, they serve as easy navigation buttons that facilitate movement from one page to another.

The three divisions—“sports update”, “news,” and “campuses”—are in equal-size boxes that occupy the middle part.  These boxes achieve the balance in the page since the upper and the lower parts are rectangular shape occupying the width.  The white background that neutralizes the color of the pictures is just appropriate since the texts are light blue.  Moreover, designing these boxes to be moving instead of static is a plus factor of this page.  Readers are more motivated because they could see different pictures effortlessly: without moving a finger at all, the pictures roll from right to left automatically. The bottom at the footer, is gray so that it will not overpower the upper portion.  This effect is just fitting because this lower part repeats the link buttons present in the heading. Even if there is an attempt to under-emphasize it, it is still useful to the user because once the page has been scrolled down, there is still a way to search any link as needed—what a convenience!

2. The STI University Website
The System Technology institute (STI) is an institution that initially expected to provide qualified man power only for its sistercompanies and their clients. But due to its “raisond’etre’, STI provides Filipino public, with learning and afterwards employment to their clients, which was their objective ofslogan E2E . (First we teach you, and then we’ll hire you). At First Filipino public responded, that is why more branches were established to make it more convenient for the enrollees/population to attend classes. Its vision of technologically empowered society for development and growth is driven by knowledge-based workforce and its mission of being a leader in ICT-enabled human resources development of innovativeness in learning and career planning methodologies was employed. The STI Educational Network System is committed to opening the door of opportunity to all upright individuals seeking to improve their lives and wellbeing.

The balanced distribution of light shows the uniqueness of the design.  The principles of good design has been met with the combination of light and dark colors. For contrast, yellow and blue match each other making it noticeable.  Also, the orange background enliven the pages . The design incorporated well the elements in logical hierarchy contributing to consistency and overall composition of the page.Moreso, the proximity of objects makes it readable and easily comprehensible. On the whole the webpage’s bright color hues contribute to the principles of STI: Education for Real because the pages’vibrant appeal speaks well of it.

                                                                                                 by Cesar Geronimo

3. The Meycauayan College Website
Meycauayan College formerly known as Maycauayan Institute was established year 1925 and continuously giving high quality education, the school provides a lot of professionals who are now in the good status in the society.  Meycauayan College was build using the name and colors of the tree “Kawayan” the reason why it was called Meycauayan.
The elements show the uniqueness of the design through the contrast of light and dark colors. The green background emphasizes the white fonts contributing to visibility of the readers.  The bamboo design truly captures the meaning of the name of the institution.  The gold color in the logo blends well with green matching the background. On the contrary, the effect of the  hierarchy of elements does not contribute much to the composition of the pages. There is oversimplicity of the organization of the elements.  As a result, the pages appear flat and unappealing.  The screen in the middle though is easy to look at because of the slow phase of the transition but it could still be enhanced.  Finally, the designer could still further improve the website by incorporating more colors and artistic elements to achieve an effective website.  by Mark Tolibas

4.  The University of Makati Website

I  choose the  Umak website among the universities here in the National Capital Region. I an satisfied with its attractivenes due to clarity and organization. The contents are well highlighted. There are sixteen ( 16 ) announcements of different events that flashes every five ( 5 ) seconds  in the upper side which attracted me so much perhaps also those who will browse  the web.
When it comes to the effectiveness used in the Umak websites, it applies it all. There are lines and line works  which identified them that these works are done and collaborated by three (3) to five ( 5 ) persons .The shapes and textures intent to the  masculinity and  broader mines of those who will browsing the website. The direction can be notified and appreciate because it has only one objective which is to encourage everyone to enroll  not only the structures and facilities of the university but the website which itself trying them to attract and catch everyone’s  decision. A visualized color combinations made in the pages.
The only comment that I will raise is the color combination used at the bottom area of the first page which is identifying the vision, mission etc. The color combination was black for background and white for the letters which has a negative  vibes on this. Come to think of it, the website of UMAK is one of a kind. There is a unique perspective and competency intent to other websites as far as universities are concerned. The outstanding  web design is much concerned of the people who worked on this. I can see also the balance and contrast of the graphics which can captured at once by the viewers. There is strong emphasis on the rhythm which signifies every viewer to be intellectual.

Website Review

Does the Arellano University Website Make Sense?

by Rey S. Medenilla

More and more private universities have been taking advantage of the worldwide web to communicate to their stakeholders.  It becomes a convenient and economical way to inform the public about the website owner's affairs and salient information that they want to share.  Therefore, web design must communicate effectively to achieve the purposes of both the owner and user of the site.  Does Arellano University website adhere to these requirements?  Does it satisfy both the owner and users?  What are some of its features that make sense?
Primarily, my opinion will be based on my experience as a user.  As regards the purpose of the owner, my experience as a part-time faculty of this university in the past would somehow speak for it.  On the whole, I find the Arellano University website adhering to the requirements of an effective website.  The logo, which is the most noticeable symbol on the banner, assures the reader that he is at the right location; no need looking for other options.  The font and the size of the university name are just sufficient, comparing with other design elements.
As I scroll down, my view is directed to the three search button icons.  With only these few buttons, I find it less complicated and more understandable.  Both the use of the icon instead of words and the red color, add up to visual acuity.  Also, they serve as easy navigation buttons that facilitate movement from one page to another.
The three divisions—sports update, news, and campuses—are in equal-size boxes that occupy the middle part.  These boxes achieve the balance in the page since the upper and the lower parts are rectangular shape occupying the width.  The white background that neutralizes the color of the pictures is just appropriate since the texts are light blue.  Moreover, designing these boxes to be moving instead of static is a plus factor of this page.  Readers are more motivated because they could see different pictures effortlessly: without moving a finger at all, the pictures move to the left automatically.
The bottom, serving as the footer, is colored gray so that it will not overpower the upper portion.  This effect is just fitting because this lower part repeats the link buttons present in the heading.  Even if there is an attempt to under-emphasize it, it is still useful to the user because once the page has been scrolled down, there is still a way to search any link as needed—what a convenience!

Looking at different university websites, I always expect that the design should speak for the institution itself. The Arellano University website based on its over-all design:  color, fonts, boxes, buttons, photos,  etc., proves to be a product of the designers creativity and succeeds in  projecting positive image that contributes to the good refutation of the whole university#

Reaction: HTMLTutorial Videos and Blog

I admit this is the first time that I have truly understood HTML.  In the past, since I am not really a "techie" or technology aficionado, HTML was just one of those computer terms lingering around.  I have never really thought that I would have a chance to sit in a class where I will study HTML as a course.

The first four video tutorials are all helpful.  First, in terms of organization, the contents are pedagogically sequenced such that a learner will start from simple to complex.  Every new material is built upon the ones that have been made clear earlier. Second, the graphics used are also clear and simple, making is easier for a beginner to focus on just a few items at a time, very user friendly indeed. Third, the voice-over sounds professional.  He speaks in well modulated voice and well articulated which makes it easy to comprehend the explanations and instructions. Lastly, the fifth video is meant to be read.  The presentation is good but the preceding videos are much better because of the audio complement.

For the two Blog tutorials, the first one is for reading. It is a website teaching the HTML.It s also inn well written form which when read thoroughly is also comprehensible.  The page design is simple which make the reading easy.  The text font and graphics are appropriate for the topic. The ambiance of professionalism being the easiest to notice attracts me as a reader which I think other readers could also attest.  On the other hand, the last tutorial, aside from being amateurish, sounds like the maker was just practicing the presentation.  The audio is quite blurred since the speaker's voice is too soft.  One has to turn up the volume to hear it.  Also, since the speaker sounds to be an Indian national, his articulation is heavily accented which adds as barrier to the comprehension of the tutorial.  Overall, I do not recommend this last material to others like me who need tutorial on the topic.

Welcome Salvo

Welcome to my world...to my humble abode, my haven, my comfort zone.  Please come in, and have a glimpse of what makes my world go round...

Before I married my wife, I had been married to my job.  I don't think it's bigamy.  The contracts I signed are two different kinds.  The former expires come my retirement, the latter, till death do as part. I'm very much committed to both, and they are my major preoccupations.

For 17 years now, I have been a college instructor in the University of Makati, where I have served the longest as compared to all other jobs I had.  One of which worth mentioning though local, was a foreign funded program where I worked for five years. I had been a teacher in the International Catholic Migration Commission, a U.S. State Department Program for Indochinese refugees. I realized the importance of  English when I taught refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos at the former Philippine Refugee Processing Camp at Morong, Bataan. This is the reason why I further my knowledge in English to enable me to teach English in college. That teaching stint with other Asian students, many of whom had zero knowledge of English, made me understand first hand the struggles of second language learners and the crucial role of the teacher in the teaching and learning process.  Never have I fully realized this with Filipino students because somehow we have been using English longer than them.  The rest of the jobs I took after that were shorts stints of college teaching in preparation for a more permanent one such as UMak.

Maybe because I practically matured in UMak that is why I stick it out here.  Unlike in my previous jobs, I've worked with the "grassroots" here, so to speak.  The students, my co-workers, everything in the workplace has made me known "reality".  It is here I realized that there is no perfect situation.  I was so idealistic in my earlier jobs, but here I have grown more adaptive.  I have learned that the jobs we take are just instruments to mold us into the kind of person we want to be.  They teach us values for the lives we touch and relationships we establish which becomes our values as teachers. Thanks God, he led me to UMak.

As regards my married life; it has just been for seven years now; quite short, considering our age. We are one of those, typical of teaching profession, who, so to speak, almost missed the "last trip".  Admittedly, I had long given up to settle down until I fancy met my wife.  I was "love- struck" when I saw her.  I had waited for so long for a partner in life;  so when I met her, in just few dating I have decided to marry her.  It was kind of a whirlwind romance.

Eveything happening very fast, our fate seems making up for the lost years.  In just few months we  spent waiting, my wife got pregnant.  It was one of the most wonderful gift I have ever received in my life.  Knowing that I will be a father soon was the most exciting experience that I've ever had.  Something that I knew comes from our God, with a message that He is entrusting us his creation.  Our son is five years old now and everyday inspiring us to be responsible parents.

Even if we are busy parenting, we still find time to have social life.  My wife and I are both actively involved with our respective high school alumni association.  From time to time, we go out either on our own or sometimes together to attend alumni homecomings.  We keep our circle of friends which becomes our way of  socialization.  These kinds of involvement we value because they serve as diversion with the humdrum of everyday life.

I know I have just shown you  a preview of my world.  For now, that is just I could offer.  I hope that I have somehow introduced myself to you.  My life is simple and I want to keep it that way.  Simple life is happier.
